world no tobacco day- advice on good oral hygiene and prevention of cancer

👀On world no tobacco day i would like to create an awareness not just to avoid tobacco in prevention of oral cancer, but also stress the importance of good oral hygiene.

There has been an increase of oral cancers among smokers and drinkers . a disturbing trend that i stumbled upon is the increase in prevalane of cancers in non smokers and non drinkers.

look out for these symptoms which may be cancers

  1. non healing ulcers
  2. red or white patches in the mouth
  3. hoarse voice
  4. difficulty in breathing
  5. pain while swallowing
  6. unexplained weight loss

after i read the article cited below i was feeling extremely sorry for the patients for this new trend

 2013;14(9):5061-5.

Early stage oral tongue cancer among non-tobacco users

--an increasing trend observed in a South Indian patient population

presenting at a single centre.

head and neck cancers are curable and the survival rates are 80 to 90 % if detected early

after i read another article

Jenn-Ren Hsiao, etal The interplay between oral microbiome, lifestyle factors and genetic polymorphisms in the risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma, Carcinogenesis, Volume 39, Issue 6, 28 May 2018, Pages 778–787, https://doi.org/10.1093/carcin/bgy053
the article suggests the
"that improving oral hygiene may reduce oral squamous cell carcinoma OSCC risk and
should be part of a public health campaign to prevent the occurrence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)"

75% of all oral cancers are due smoking and chewing tobacco
the other 25% risk factors are
  • human pappilomma virus HPV
  • PAAN MASALA
  • POOR ORAL HYGIENE
  • chemical inhalation
  • preservative foods
  • radiation from long term exposure to sunlight
bottom line : not just avoid one risk factor avoid all risk facors the easiest to practice is good oral hygiene habits
